The Art Institute of Chicago is deaccessioning 300 works of Chinese art from its collection at Christie’s nyc in September. The “Chinese pieces of art through the Art Institute of Chicago” auction, planned for September 12, having a complementary sale that is online 10–17, can benefit the museum’s Asian art department’s purchase investment.

“Our curators are often evaluating and refining the museum’s collection,” the Art Institute stated in a declaration published by the Chicago Tribune, noting that the choice to offer the works had been authorized by its board of trustees. “This auction permits us to deaccession a wide range of works in areas where we’ve significant breadth and level, therefore the profits will go back to the Asian Art department’s acquisition investment.”

The Art Institute of Chicago has some 35,000 items in its Asian art division, which comprises significantly more than 10 % of the 300,000-work collection. The purchase reflects the museum’s ongoing efforts to streamline its collection with an eye fixed toward eliminating redundancy.

In March, the institute deaccessioned 22 jade that is chinese at the “Important Chinese Art” purchase at Sotheby’s nyc during Asia Week, getting an extraordinary $3.15 million. The works, which auction home vice president and Asian art unit director Christina Prescott-Walker called “a dazzling providing” in a statement, all offered.
